Rock and text are photographed, scanned, and screen-printed repeatedly, until meaningful visual information is lost to the noise of the medium. This work explores how impressions are changed and lost as time passes. Printed using dissolved charcoal powder, the prints themselves are soft marks that a sweep of the hand could change. Charcoal, paper, our own mind - the tools that we use to record and remember are unreliable keepers of information. What remains when nothing is immune to the passage of time?

 

The phrase, “When Rock Turns to Stone” invites viewers to consider two similar objects and ask themselves how one becomes the other. In doing so, one might consider the forces of change that occur in nature over geological ages. Nothing is permanent. Time touches all.
