A black carp nestles amidst wavering ripples and sprawling water weeds. Water Spirit is inspired by the sights and sounds of Lower Peirce Reservoir, a place in the artist’s neighbourhood. It provides a calm place of leisure and retreat and nourishes residents with its water – yet has also been the location of several deaths in recent years. With its monochromatic palette and delicate minimalist shapes, the work reflects the tension between the foreboding mystery and quiet beauty of the reservoir.
